Signs the level may be dropping
- The water comes out slowly, in jerks, or with a lot of air bubbles.
- The pump runs but delivers water only for a short time, then stops giving.
- The problem gets worse in summer or when neighbours also run their pumps, and improves after rain.
It may be the pump, not the water
The same signs can come from a worn pump, a leaking pipe, a blocked strainer or a weak electricity supply. That is why the mistri should check the pump and pipe first, instead of straight away saying the bore is dry. If you are not sure, ask the mistri to explain how he knows. Our guide on a motor that does not pull water lists the pump checks.
What can be done if the level really fell
Never let the pump run dry for long. It can burn the motor.
- Lower the pump further down the bore, if the bore is deep enough. A mistri can measure how deep the water is now.
- Deepen the bore or drill a new one. Ask what depth he suggests and why. Nobody can promise exactly how deep the water will be before drilling.
- Use water carefully while the level is low: fill the tank in one go instead of running the pump for hours.
